GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Erin Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) highlighted the University of Michigan women's track and field team's efforts on the first day of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Thursday (May 23), as she advanced to the NCAA Championships in the discus. Four other Wolverines also earned the right to continue competition in the quarterfinals at North Carolina A&T State Universities Irwin Belk Track.

Pendleton opened with a throw of 51.94 meters (170-5) to qualify for the finals, where she bettered that mark with a season-best toss of 53.13 meters (174-4). She finished third in a field of 48 competitors and was one of 12 discus throwers to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships (June 5-8) in Eugene, Ore.

In the 1,500-meter run, Michigan had three runners advance to the quarterfinals. Fifth-year senior Amanda Eccleston (Adrian, Mich./Tecumseh) (4:24.44) and sophomore/freshman Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) (4:26.08) placed first and third, respectively, in heat one to automatically move on to the next round. In heat two, senior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) secured an automatic qualifying spot, finishing in fourth place with a time of 4:19.50. Eccleston, Osika and Addison will compete in the quarterfinals on Saturday (May 25) at 6 p.m.

Senior/junior Meg Bellino (Monroe, Mich./Catholic Central) clocked a career-best 800-meter time of 2:06.21 to finish fourth in heat six. The top three in each heat automatically qualified for the quarterfinals, while the next three best times, which included Bellino, secured at-large bids to the next round. Bellino will now participate in the quarterfinals on Friday (May 24) at 7 p.m.

The top 12 finishers from both the 800- and 1,500-meter run will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.

In addition to Bellino, five other Wolverines will be in action tomorrow, including freshman Cindy Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) and junior Amber Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) in the 100-meter hurdles, juniors Alex Leptich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and senior/junior Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) in the pole vault.
