JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Freshman Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team continued her impressive rookie season with a victory in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds (May 29) at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Finn led the 20th-ranked Wolverines on the first day of competition by winning the event with a time of 33:13.46. The top-12 finish in the event qualified Finn for the NCAA Outdoor Championship field.
Junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester)advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1,500-meter run with a third-place finish in heat one, achieving a time of 4:20.47, which was the 17th-best time of all 48 first-round competitors in the event. Junior/sophomore Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) was unable to advance to Saturday's (May 31) 1,500m quarterfinal after finishing sixth in heat one and 20th overall with a time of 4:21.49.
Sophomore Danielle Pfeifer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) led a contingent of three Wolverines in the 800-meter run, setting a career-best time of 2:06.59 to finish 23rd overall in the event. Her time in heat one fell just short of qualifying for the 800m quarterfinals on Friday (May 30). Pfeifer edged her previous personal-best time of 2:06.68 achieved at the Payton Jordan Invitational on May 4.
The Wolverines will continue competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Friday.
Senior Erin Busbee placed 16th in the long jump with a leap of 5.94 meters (19-6 feet).
Fifth-year senior Joanna Fleming finished 44th in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.96 meters (170-6 ft.).
