ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's track and field head coach James Henry announced Wednesday (Jan. 4) that fifth-year senior Emily Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore), senior Alexandria Williams (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and junior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) will serve as team captains for the 2012 season.

"I am pleased with who we've selected to serve as captains for the upcoming season," Henry said. "We have a balanced group of captains, with a thrower, a sprinter and a distance runner representing the different areas of our team. I think they will do an excellent job helping lead our squad this season."

Pendleton becomes a two-time captain, having been elected to lead the Wolverines in the 2010 season as well. The two-time Big Ten discus champion (2008, '09) will return to the field after redshirting the 2011 season.

"I am very excited for Emily to be one of our team captains and team leaders," said assistant coach Sandy Fowler. "She has such an incredible work ethic and positive attitude. Emily will take on the responsibility and wholeheartedly assist the team in moving forward toward a championship season."

Addison is a two-time All-American, earning the honor in the distance medley relay and 800-meter run at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships.

"Becca has demonstrated great leadership over the two-plus years she's been at Michigan. She's a most deserving tri-captain," said associate head coach Mike McGuire. "I feel her contributions to the team will extend beyond her Big Ten titles. She'll be a great leader on and off the track."

Williams has scored for the Maize and Blue at the Big Ten Championships in each of the last two years -- twice in the 4x400-meter relay and once in the 800-meter run.

"Alex epitomizes what team is about," said Henry. "She is a blue-collar athlete who has developed into a top athlete and leader."

In addition to the three captains, the Wolverines' remaining seniors will also be called upon for their leadership this season.

"The balance of leadership on this team is very high and I will continue to pull upon the seniors to lead," Henry said. "Every senior cannot be a captain, but every senior can be a leader. We will need all of our seniors to help this team be successful."

The Wolverines will begin the 2012 season by hosting the Michigan Women's Open on Saturday (Jan. 7) at 11 a.m. at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
