ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's track and field head coach James Henry announced Saturday (Jan. 19) that senior middle-distance runner Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven), junior hurdler Amber Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) and senior/junior pole vaulter Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) will serve as team captains for the 2013 season.
"This is the first time in a number of years we have selected captains through a team vote, and I'm extremely proud of how the vote turned out," said Henry. "Three outstanding women were selected to represent our team in the different event areas -- distance, field and sprints."
Each captain was chosen by the team and coaches to represent the different event areas -- Addison (distance), Smith (sprints) and Tobel (field). It marks Addison's second straight year as captain and will be the first year representing the Wolverines for Smith and Tobel.
Addison was a two-time indoor All-American last season, earning All-America first team honors in the 800-meter run and second-team recognition as a member of the distance medley relay. At the Big Ten Indoor Championships, she won the 800-meter run title and ran the mile leg of the DMR, which won its ninth straight title for U-M. Following the outdoor season, Addison was named a Capital One Academic All-America third team member.
Smith scored in the Big Ten Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles and tallied points for the Wolverines in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. She capped the 2012 outdoor season by advancing to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in the 400-meter hurdles.
Tobel etched her name in the Michigan record book in 2012, setting new program standards in the indoor (4.23 meters, 13-10 1/2) and outdoor (4.24 meters, 13-11) pole vault. She earned All-America first team honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, Tobel garnered All-Big Ten and All-America second team honors.
"Becca, Kiley and Amber are the cream of the crop in terms of what our coaching staff looks for in a leader and are highly respected by their teammates," added Henry. "Each young lady brings her own unique leadership qualities that will help this team reach its fullest potential, and I look forward to working with them throughout the season."
The Wolverines will host their first of two home meet with the annual Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 10:30 a.m. at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
