Big Ten Preview -- In its first year as a member of the Big Ten Conference, Nebraska will host the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Championships at the Devaney Center Indoor Track. Michigan will get a chance to preview the championship site this weekend, which features one of four hydraulic-banked tracks in the nation and one of eight in the world. NU's 200-meter track has the largest radius (67 feet) of any indoor-banked track in the world.
National Notables -- Michigan has four student-athletes ranked in the top 10 in the nation in their respective events. Junior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) ranks fourth in the mile (4:41.74#), while freshman Shannon Osika (Waterford, Mich./Mott) is currently fifth in the mile behind Addison (4:41.89#). In the field, junior Ada Unachukwu (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) ranks seventh in the triple jump (12.68 meters, 41-7.25), while junior/sophomore Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) is seventh in the pole vault (4.15 meters, 13-7.25). Each of those nationally ranked times was recorded during "The Dual," except Tobel's mark in the vault, which she recorded at the Red Simmons Invitational on Jan. 21. In the Rankings -- Michigan was tabbed No. 20 in the first regular season NCAA Division I top 25 poll released on Jan. 24 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Williams Wins Goodridge 800-meter Run -- The 800-meter run at the Red Simmons Invitational (Jan. 21) was contested in honor of former University of Michigan student-athlete and coach Francie Goodridge, who presented an award to the winner of the event -- senior Brittani Williams (Detroit, Mich./Jackson), who won the 800 in a time of 2:15.64.
Last Time on the Track -- Michigan hosted the Red Simmons Invitational on Jan. 21. Junior/sophomore Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) improved upon her school-record setting vault of 13-1.50, which she recorded earlier this season, clearing a personal-best height of 13-7.25 to win the pole vault. Sisters Emily Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) and Erin Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) dominated the throwing events. Emily won the shot put and the weight throw, while Erin took second in the weight throw and third in the weight throw. On the track, sophomore/freshman Alicia Patterson (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) recorded her first career win with a personal-best time of 5:08.62 in the mile run. Sophomore Amber Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) was Michigan's top finisher in the 200-meter dash (25.56) and the 60-meter hurdles. She clocked a personal-best time of 8.62 in the hurdle prelims to advance to the finals, where she took third in 8.72.
Personal Improvement -- At the Red Simmons Invitational, 20 Michigan student-athletes recorded personal-best marks. With just three meets crossed of the 2012 schedule, 27 Wolverines have set new PRs in at least one event, with six improving in two events.
