ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team will be represented by freshman Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield), sophomore Cindy Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron), fifth-year senior Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western), as well as its distance medley relay at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, the NCAA announced today (Wednesday, March 5). The meet will be held from March 14-15 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.
For each individual event contested, the top 16 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition, while for each relay event contested, the top 12 declared relay teams qualified.
The distance medley relay, which recently won Michigan's 11th straight Big Ten title, will consist of freshman Jaimie Phelan (Kitchener, Ont./St. Mary's), sophomore Maya Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), sophomore Danielle Pfeifer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) and junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester). Long was a member of the Wolverines' 2013 national champion DMR team. The DMR's top time this season of 11:00.20, which came at the SPIRE Invitational (Feb. 14), ranks seventh in the national championship field.
Finn, who won the Big Ten 5,000-meter title in a school-record time of 15:52.11, was named Big Ten Indoor Freshman of the Year yesterday (Tuesday, March 4). In her first national championship appearance, she is seeded eighth.
Ofili, the Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, is seeded fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 8.08, which came in her winning performance at the Big Ten Championships. This will mark Ofili's first trip to the national indoor meet.
Tobel will return to the NCAA Indoor Championships for the second time in her career and first time since 2012. She finished tied for eighth at the 2012 national championships to earn All-America first team honors. Going into this year's national event, she owns the 16th and final seed with her school-record setting mark of 4.25 meters (13-11.25).
