Simpson Takes Down Triple Jump Record
Sophomore Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) highlighted the field events at the Stanford Invitational (April 1) for the Maize and Blue by breaking the six-year-old Michigan outdoor triple jump record. Simpson took second for the Wolverines with a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 42-3 1/2 in the triple jump. The old record was set by Tania Longe (1995-98) in 1995 with a mark of 41-1 1/2.
Throwers Compete in Raleigh
While most of the Michigan women's track and field team was at the Stanford Invitational, assistant coach Anne Takacs-Grieb took five throwers to the Raleigh Relays (March 30-31) in Raleigh, N.C. Freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) took second in the discus with a mark of 160-7 on Friday. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) broke the Michigan hammer throw record with a toss of 166-2 1/2 and placed seventh in the event.

The previous record of 162-4 was set by Julie Presley (1999-2000) in 1999. The NCAA provisional distance in this event is 183-9. Phillips' previous high was 160-0.
Middle Distance Effective in Golden State
Senior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) had a terrific day at the Stanford Invitational (March 31-April 1) as she was victorious in the 800-meter run in the morning, and followed that with a sixth-place showing in the afternoon's 1,500 with an NCAA provisional time of 4:23.51. Senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS) also ran well in the morning 1,500, taking second.
Wolverines Receive Two NCAA Marks Early
It took seven indoor track meets before Michigan had someone receive an NCAA provisional qualifying mark or time. At the second outdoor competition of the season (Stanford Invitational) the Wolverines picked up two such achievements. Senior Katie Jazwinski and sophomore Teyonna Simpson both qualified with NCAA provisional times and marks in their respective events. Jazwinski ran a 4:23.51 to a sixth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run, while Simpson leaped to a mark of 42-3 1/2 and took second in the triple jump. Simpson had an indoor NCAA provisional mark of 41-8 3/4 earlier this season, but that mark was not far enough to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship. This is the first time Jazwinski has received an NCAA provisional time for the 800.
