ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Nine women from the University of Michigan women's track and field team are officially continuing their 2017 outdoor seasons into national postseason competition as they were among the qualifiers announced Thursday (May 18) for next week's NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Lexington, Kentucky. The University of Kentucky will host the meet May 25-27.
Distance runners Claire Borchers, Gina Sereno, Jaimie Phelan, Jamie Morrissey, Sarah Zieve and Haley Meier; high jumper Claire Kieffer-Wright; sprinter Jade Harrison; and thrower Courtney Jacobsen earned bids to Lexington by virtue of ranking among the top 48 athletes who declared for the postseason in their respective events.
The three-day meet serves as the qualifying meet for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, which will take place June 7-10 at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. The top 12 finishers in each individual event from the East Region -- in which Michigan competes -- and the West Region comprise the 24-person fields in June in Eugene.
First-round and quarterfinal races will be contested in track events ranging from 100 meters through 1,500 meters, with semifinals and finals scheduled in June for Eugene. Quarterfinals will be contested in the steeplechase, and semifinals will be run for the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races.
In the throws and horizontal jumps, competitors will only get three attempts to record their best marks, and the high jump and pole vault will continue until there are only 12 competitors remaining.

Phelan is in search of first team All-America honors at 1,500 meters for the second consecutive season after an eighth-place finish at NCAAs a year ago.
Phelan teamed up with Morrissey, Sereno and Harrison at the indoor national meet in March to earn first team All-America honors with a fifth-place distance medley relay performance.
Sereno will look to earn outdoor first team All-America honors for the first time in her career after taking second-team honors at 10,000 meters in 2016. She also earned indoor second-team honors at 3,000 meters this winter.
