ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team was named a 2012 Cross Country and Track and Field Capital One Academic All-America third team member today (Thursday, June 21), as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Addison is the second straight Wolverine to earn the honor, following Kaitlyn Peale, who earned second team honors in 2011.
Addison was a two-time USTFCCCA All-American during the indoor season, doubling her career count, as she earned first team honors in the 800-meter run and second team laurels in the distance medley relay. She also repeated as the Big Ten indoor 800-meter champion and helped Michigan win its ninth consecutive Big Ten DMR title. During outdoor season, she placed sixth in 1,500-meter run and eighth in 800-meter run at Big Ten Outdoor Championships. She also qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in the 1,500-meter run, advancing to the quarterfinals and placing 16th.
During cross country, Addison helped Michigan to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships, finishing fourth to earn All-Big Ten first team accolades. The Wolverines followed with a winning performance at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, placing four runners in the top eight. Addison finished runner-up to garner All-Great Lakes Region honors. At the NCAA Championships, Addison took 118th to help U-M finish 15th overall -- its highest team finish since 2006.
The 2012 track and field team captain is a movement science major in the School of Kinesiology. She is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient and has been a U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award winner in each of the last two years. Addison was also named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic list following the 2011 cross country season.
Tennessee's Chanelle Price was recognized as the women's Academic All-American of the Year. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
