Peale Claims Academic All-America Third Team Honors

June 24, 2010

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan junior distance runner Kaitlyn Peale (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country third team on Thursday (June 24), as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Peale becomes the seventh U-M trackster to earn the honor and the first since Katie Erdman was a first-team honoree in 2007.

Peale earned All-America honors during the cross country season, placing 28th at the NCAA Championships in a time of 20:38.8. She led the women's cross country team to a fourth-place Big Ten finish in 2009, finishing the 6,000-meter race in a personal-best time of 20:33 for fourth. She finished in the top 10 in six races, placing in the top four on five occasions.

During the indoor track season, she was the only Wolverine with a provisional mark in two events (3,000-meter and 5,000-meter runs). At the Big Ten Indoor Championships, she picked up another fourth-place finish in a career-best time of 16:22.73 in the 5,000-meter run.

She competed in the 1,500-meter run at the first outdoor meet of the season, the Bulls Invitational, in a time of 4:30.59 before missing the remainder of the season due to injury.

Peale nabbed Academic All-Big Ten honors in both cross country and track during the 2009-10 academic year while picking up her third consecutive U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award as an industrial and operational engineering major.

Academic All-Americans are selected after a voting process at the district level. Those who are named to all-district first teams advance to the All-America ballot. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
