MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Keyed by its outside hitters, the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team swept Marshall, 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 26-24), in its season opener on Friday afternoon (Aug. 26) in the first match of the Morehead State Eagle Challenge at Wetherby Gymnasium. Michigan faced a 24-20 deficit in the third set before rallying to win the match in three sets.
Senior outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) led the offense, putting down 11 kills to go with a service ace and three digs. Sophomore outside hitter Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) played just two sets, recording 10 kills and seven digs as four Wolverines tallied at least three kills. In her first collegiate action, freshman setter Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) handed out 20 assists and senior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) anchored the defense with 16 digs.
Facing a 24-20 deficit in the third set, the Maize and Blue ripped off six straight points to sweep the match. A kill by Hunt off the block got Michigan within 24-21, sending the lefty back to serve. She served the next five points, as two attack errors by Marshall coupled by two kills from sophomore outside hitter Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and an ace by Hunt gave the Wolverines the come-from-behind 26-24 win.
It was all Michigan in the second frame as the Wolverines jumped out to a 5-2 lead en route to the 25-11 win. U-M hit .333 in the set, led by seven total kills from Hunt and Erwin while holding Marshall to a -.185 clip.
Down 9-6 in the first, U-M reeled off five straight points to go up 11-6. Erwin keyed the rally with two kills sandwiched between a kill from senior middle blocker Courtney Fletcher (Johns Creek, Ga./Northview) and a Marshall error. The Herd pulled within a point at 22-21, but the Wolverines scored three of the next four points, winning the match on a termination from redshirt junior right side Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf).
The Wolverines will be back on the court later tonight for a match against host Morehead State at 7 p.m.
