TOLEDO, Ohio -- In the first action of 2010, the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team swept Binghamton, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21, in the first match of the Rocket Classic on Friday evening (Aug. 27) at Savage Arena.
Junior outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) led the offense with 11 kills, while redshirt junior middle blocker Karlee Bruck (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) chipped in eight terminations. Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) had a double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs while notching five kills.
Michigan led wire to wire in the first set, taking its largest lead at 21-15 off a Binghamton ball-handling error. The Wolverines grabbed a 24-20 lead before hanging on for a 25-23 first-set victory, when sophomore right-side hitter Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf) ended the set with a kill off the Binghamton block.
The Wolverines and Bearcats traded points to start the second before Michigan took control of the set with a four-point spurt off the serving of junior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption). The Bearcats never got closer than four points the rest of the way in a 25-16 U-M win.
After falling behind 13-10 in the third set, the Wolverines rattled off seven straight points to swing the momentum in their favor. Bruck and Zimmerman each contributed two kills during the decisive run, with Bruck ending the set and the match with a kill off a quick set from Zimmerman.
The Wolverines continue the Rocket Classic tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 28), first against Loyola (Md.) at noon. U-M will then complete the tournament against host Toledo at 7 p.m., airing on BCSN in Ohio. Both games can also be followed via live blog on MGoBlue.com.
