TOLEDO, Ohio -- Behind a combined 21 kills from the junior tandem of Courtney Fletcher (Duluth, Ga./Northview) and Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph), the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team picked up a convincing 3-0 sweep of Loyola (Md.), 25-16, 25-15, 25-14, on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 28) in the first of two games today at the Rocket Classic, held inside Savage Arena.
Hunt recorded 11 kills for her second consecutive match in double figures, while Fletcher notched 10 in her first action of the season. Freshman middle blocker Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ont./Birchmount Park Collegiate) chipped in nine terminations as the Wolverines hit an impressive .443, with only eight errors in the match. Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) contributed 33 assists and four kills, with libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) picking up 11 digs in the victory.
U-M fell behind early in the first set but never trailed again after two consecutive kills from Fletcher in the middle put the Wolverines on top, 11-10. Michigan picked up the offensive pace at that point, scoring 14 of the last 20 points to take the first set, 25-16.
Zimmerman keyed the Wolverines in the second set, using a short serve for six consecutive points and a 12-5 lead. U-M kept the advantage the rest of the way, emptying the bench before taking a 25-15 set win.
Michigan kept the momentum going in the third set, taking a lead at 4-3 off a Cross kill out of the middle after falling in an early 3-1 hole. The Wolverines kept the lead throughout, using six kills from Hunt and four from Cross to record a 25-14 victory.
