Michigan Sweeps Tennessee State to Move to 2-0 in Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team hit better than .300 for the second straight match and used eight blocks and six service aces to defeat Tennessee State in three sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-14) Saturday afternoon (Aug. 30) on day two of the Arkansas Invitational inside Barnhill Arena. The Wolverines improved to 2-0 on the year for the ninth consecutive season.

For the second straight match, sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) led the Wolverines in kills, posting 11 terminations to go along with three blocks. Freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Cailf./LaSalle) added nine kills and seven digs. Junior Lindsey Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) had a match-high 16 digs and contributed a pair of service aces, while classmate Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) had 28 assists and nine digs. Junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) recorded five blocks.

Michigan came out strong and cruised to the set-one victory over the Tigers. The Wolverines scored the match's first eight points off Lerg's serve, with her ace making it 4-0 and a Cole kill putting U-M up by that 8-0 margin. Goode's termination gave the Maize and Blue a 14-6 lead, and Cole, who had five kills in the opening set, made it 18-9 with a successful swing. The Wolverines won the set, 25-13, after a Cole kill. Michigan hit .267 in the opening set, compared to -.033 for the Tigers.

The Maize and Blue fell behind early in the second set but rallied for the four-point win. Freshman Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) and Goode combined for a block as the Wolverines trailed, 7-6. Goode tied the set at eight with a kill and Michigan took a 15-14 lead, its first of the set, on Warner's service ace. A Tiger error gave Michigan a 17-14 lead, and Cole and senior/junior Olivia Reed (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) combined for a block for a 21-18 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Cole put U-M up 23-19, and Warner's kill put the Wolverines up 2-0 going into the locker room.

The Wolverines swept the match after hitting .400 in the third set. Knop's kill gave the Maize and Blue a 4-2 lead. Lambert put Michigan up 6-2 with a termination and made it 12-4 with another kill. Cole's kill gave Michigan a 16-9 advantage, and back-to-back kills from Lambert put the Maize and Blue up 20-13. Junior Tiffany Morales' (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) ace set Michigan up for match point, and Goode's solo block sealed the win for the Wolverines.

Michigan hit .307 for the match while forcing Tennessee State into a .107 hitting percentage. The Tigers also has seven service errors, five in the second set.

Michigan will conclude play in the Arkansas Invitational Saturday night (Aug. 30) against the host Razorbacks. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CDT.
