ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 22nd-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team rallied to take the first set, then turned it on in the final two sets for a sweep of Central Michigan Friday night (Aug. 31) on the first day of the adidas/Michigan Challenge at Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-23, 25-11 and 25-15 in the Wolverines' first home match of 2012.
Junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) led the Wolverine offense with 10 kills and added nine digs. Sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 28 assists and three blocks, while junior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) added eight kills and four block assists. Freshman Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) tied Erwin with a team-high nine digs.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair that featured 13 ties and five lead changes. Central Michigan led most of the first half of the set, taking a 9-5 lead on a Kaitlyn McIntyre kill. Michigan rallied to tie the set at 10 on a CMU service error and took the lead one point later when freshman Krystalyn Goode (River Falls, Wis./Nicolet) and Erwin teamed up for a block. A solo block from Dannemiller made it 17-15 Wolverines. Central rallied to take a 22-21 lead on back-to-back blocks, but Michigan scored the final three points of the set on a service error and kills from Dannemiller and Erwin.
Michigan dominated the second set as the serve of Erwin gave the Maize and Blue a 12-0 run for a 15-3 advantage. Central cut the run, but the Wolverines came back to a 19-5 advantage. Erwin's solo block made the score 23-7, and freshman Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga./Walton) closed out the set with a kill. Michigan hit .333 in that set and did not have an attack error.
The Wolverines raced out to an 8-3 lead in the third set on back-to-back kills from Erwin. After two straight terminations from junior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton), Central took timeout at 12-4. Toon and Goode combined on a block for a 15-5 lead. Central Michigan came as close as 16-12, but Cross and Dannemiller combined for a block at 19-13 and Toon had two straight kills for a 21-14 lead. Michigan closed out the match on a service ace from freshman Lindsey Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy).
Michigan hit .242 in the match, compared to .086 for the Chippewas. Michigan had nine blocks on the night and seven service aces, including three from Erwin.
Michigan will have two matches on day two of the adidas/Michigan Challenge on Saturday (Sept. 1), facing UMBC at 11 a.m. and Arkansas at 7:30 p.m.
N O T E S
Michigan has now won 15 straight home openers. The last time Michigan fell in a home opener was in the 1997 season in a 3-1 loss to Florida State on Sept. 5.
Lexi Erwin has now registered double-digit kills in all five Wolverine matches this season. She has 30 career double-digit kill performances.
Junior Ally Sabol played in her first match of the season tonight and had seven digs.
This is the earliest date (Aug. 31) that the Wolverines have played at home in school history.
Michigan has now won four straight matches against Central Michigan.
Head coach Mark Rosen earned his 475th career win tonight. Rosen now has a 475-202 career record and a 266-165 record at U-M.
Michigan is now 3-0 in three-set matches on the season and earned its second straight sweep. Michigan defeated Missouri in three sets on Aug. 25.
