MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The 23rd-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team used a .346 hitting percentage and 11 kills from junior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) to sweep Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 8) on day two of the Ambassador Hotels Golden Eagle Classic at the Al McGuire Center. Set scores were 25-13, 25-16 and 25-20.

Michigan jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set on a Cross kill. A termination from junior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) made it 9-4 Wolverines. A 4-0 mini run was fueled by two kills and a block from Cross, giving the Maize and Blue a 14-6 advantage. Michigan extended the lead to double digits (19-9) on a kill from freshman Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) and took a 23-12 lead on a block assist from Goode and junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park). Michigan closed out the set on a ball-handling and attack error from EIU. Michigan hit .407 in that first set.

Eastern Illinois got out to a 5-2 lead in the second set, but the Wolverines took an 8-7 lead on back-to-back Panther errors. There were seven ties in the second set, the last at 13-all. Michigan scored five of the next six points after that tie, capped by a Cross service ace and a Panther error. Michigan scored the final four points of the set as an assisted block from Goode and Toon gave the Maize and Blue the 2-0 lead.

The first half of the third set was tight as there were 11 ties, the latest at 12-all on a Cross kill. Michigan extended the lead to 14-12 on a Toon termination. An Erwin service ace and an EIU ball-handling error gave U-M a 17-13 advantage. Murphy's kill made it 19-14 Wolverines and a solo block from Goode put Michigan up 22-17. Michigan ended the match on an Erwin kill at 25-20.

The Maize and Blue held Eastern Illinois to a .034 hitting percentage. Michigan also had 36 digs a team, compared to 26 for EIU. There were a combined 20 service errors in the match.
