YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team cruised to a sweep of Eastern Michigan, 25-17, 25-11, 26-24, Wednesday (Sept. 9) at the Convocation Center. The Wolverines used a balanced offensive attack with eight different players registering kills for their sixth straight win to start the year.
Senior outside hitter Juliana Paz (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) led the Wolverines with 12 kills while sophomore outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) and senior right side Megan Bower (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) added eight and seven kills, respectively. Set three proved the closest of the three as EMU capitalized on Michigan miscues to build an early lead. After the Wolverines came back to take a 15-10 advantage, mistakes let the Eagles back in, as EMU regained a 17-16 lead and forced U-M into its first timeout of the night. The Eagles had U-M on the ropes up 24-22 before the Wolverines reeled off four straight points including the match winner by Hunt forthe 26-24 victory.
The first set started as a close affair with the teams holding a 9-9 tie until Zimmerman got hot from the service stripe, reeling off six straight points to put the Wolverines on top, 15-9. Michigan would not look back, using four kills apiece from Bower and Paz and 12 helpers from Zimmerman in the 25-17 win.
U-M raced out to a 12-2 lead in the second set and never looked back, holding EMU to just 11 points in a 25-11 victory. Junior/sophomore Jackie Nissen (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) -- in her first action since the 2007 campaign -- posted a set-high four kills along with Bower.
