ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior middle blocker Courtney Fletcher (Duluth, Ga./Northview) posted 11 kills and sophomore right side Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf) knocked down a career-high nine to propel the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-12) sweep of Chicago State in the first of two matches on Saturday (Sept. 11) at the Michigan/adidas Invitational, held at Cliff Keen Arena.
Fletcher tallied a .588 attack percentage to earn her team-high kill total, while senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) notched 28 assists, eight kills, four digs and three service aces. Junior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) reached double digits in digs (11).
U-M was slow out of the gates, trading points with the Cougars for much of the first set. A kill by Zimmerman to put the Wolverines on top at 17-15 keyed a late 9-3 run to end the set in favor of Michigan, 25-18.
As was the case last night (Friday, Sept. 10) against Youngstown State, U-M rode the serving of senior defensive specialist Maggie Busch (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Christian) to start the second with a 4-0 lead. The Wolverines did not look back, using six kills from McElheny and four from junior outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) en route to a 25-10 decision.
The third set featured back-and-forth play at the beginning, before Michigan reeled off six straight points on the serve of Donhoff to go on top, 17-8. The Wolverines kept a comfortable distance the rest of the way for the 25-12 match-clinching win.
U-M concludes its own tournament tonight with against Miami (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m.
Today's match was the first time that Alex Hunt did not lead the Wolverines in kills this season. Her streak of 11 straight matches with double-digit kills was also snapped.
Claire McElheny recorded a career-best nine kills, improving upon her previous high of five kills.
It was the second time this season Courtney Fletcher recorded double-digit kills.
Head coach Mark Rosen used the same starting lineup for the second consecutive match. Jennifer Cross, Alex Hunt, Maggie Busch, Claire McElheny, Courtney Fletcher, Lexi Zimmerman and Sloane Donhoff all started this afternoon's contest.
The Wolverines held their opponent to a negative hitting percentage (-.036) for the second straight game.
Lexi Zimmerman is the only Wolverine to play in every set this season.
