COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- A balanced attack led the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Siena in the Wolverines' opener in the Texas A&M Invitational Friday morning (Sept. 13) inside Reed Arena. Set scores were 25-14, 25-17 and 25-17.
Sophomore Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) recorded a career-high 10 kills and added three blocks. Senior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) added nine, while classmate Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) had seven. Sophomore Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) saw her first action of the season and had 28 assists and six digs. Sophomore Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had a match-high 12 digs in the Wolverines' sixth win of the season.
The Wolverines hit .400, while Siena had eight attack errors in the match's first set, which was tied at five, before a mini 4-0 run was capped by a Goode kill. Siena cut the lead to 9-8, before the Wolverines went on a 5-1 run, forcing Siena to call timeout. The Wolverines put the game away with a 6-0 run, capped by back-to-back Siena attack errors to make it 21-10. A kill from sophomore Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) put U-M up 23-13, and a Siena service error gave the Maize and Blue the first set at 25-14.
Goode had five kills, while Erwin recorded six digs in the second set, a 25-17 Michigan victory. The Wolverines put up the first five points of the set, including two Cross kills. Freshman Gabbie Bulic (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) made it 10-5 with a termination, and an Erwin kill put the Wolverines up 12-6. Blocks from Goode and junior/sophomore Olivia Reed (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) made it 15-7 as Siena took a timeout. A Goode kill then made it 18-9, and her fourth kill of the set put U-M up 23-13. Siena staved off three set points, but Goode ended the set on a kill to put Michigan up 2-0.
Michigan had a 14-5 kill advantage in the third set to clinch the match. Freshman Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had back-to-back blocks, giving the Maize and Blue the early 3-0 lead. A Siena attack error put the Wolverines up 9-4, and sophomore Kelly Murphy's (Marietta, Ga./Walton) termination made it 12-5. Cole put Michigan up 17-10 with a kill, and Cross gave U-M a six-point advantage (19-13) on a kill with a Warner assist. Goode had three of Michigan's last four kills, and Cole ended the match with her fourth termination of the match.
The Wolverines had a 44-38 dig advantage and five total blocks. U-M hit .255 for the match, compared to .020 for Siena.
Michigan continues the Texas A&M Invitational Friday night (Sept. 13) against host Texas A&M. The match starts at 7 p.m. CDT.
