ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 22nd-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team dropped a five-set match for the first time the season in a 3-2 loss to Western Kentucky in match four of the Coke/Michigan Invitational Friday night (Sept. 14) at Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 23-25 and 15-11.
Junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) led the Michigan attack with 20 kills and made it a double-double with 10 digs. Classmate Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) had 15 kills and a career-high nine total blocks. Junior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) had 10 kills and six blocks, while sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) added 48 assists. Freshman Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) led the Maize and Blue with 13 digs.
Michigan took the first set 25-22 after hitting .417 and getting five kills apiece from Erwin and Cross. Michigan went up 8-3 on a kill by freshman Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga./Walton). Western Kentucky knotted the score at eight, but an Erwin kill gave U-M a 14-12 lead. WKU tied it as late as 18-all, but Michigan took a three-point lead (23-20) on a Hilltopper attack error. Michigan closed out the set on a Cross kill.
Western Kentucky took sets two and three. In set two, the Hilltopper defense held Michigan to a .115 hitting percentage. WKU's Jordyn Skinner had nine kills in the set as WKU won, 25-14. In the third set, Western Kentucky hit .429 as a team, with Skinner having eight terminations. The Hilltoppers never trailed in the third in the 25-16 victory.
Michigan forced the fifth set with a 25-23 victory in the fourth game. U-M raced out to a 4-0 lead, capped by a Morales service ace. Toon's kill gave Michigan a 10-5 lead and a WKU attack error put the Maize and Blue up 14-8. Erwin had a kill at 18-13 and had another big swing at 20-14. Michigan went up 23-17 on a termination from freshman Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet), but WKU battled back and got within 24-23. Cross ended the set with a kill from Dannemiller's assist. Erwin had eight kills in that fourth set.
Morales opened the fifth set with a service ace and a kill from freshman Lindsey Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) made it 3-2 Wolverines. Western Kentucky then took a 9-6 lead on a Michigan attack error, forcing the Maize and Blue to call timeout. A block from Toon and Goode cut the lead to 9-8, but WKU scored the next two points. The Hilltoppers scored the match's final three points as a block from Heather Boyan and Paige Wessel ended the match.
Michigan hit .255 for the match, while Western Kentucky had a .338 hitting percentage. The Hilltoppers also had 10 service aces. The Wolverines had 10 total blocks, while Western Kentucky had nine.
Michigan concludes play in the Coke/Michigan Invitational Saturday night (Sept. 15) when the Maize and Blue hosts Duke at 7 p.m.
