ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team saw its unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday (Sept. 19) in a three-set loss to visiting Oregon State, 27-25, 25-22, 25-23, at Crisler Arena. Three different Wolverines tallied double-digit kills in the loss, led by senior Juliana Paz's (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) 14 kills.
Senior Veronica Rood (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) swung at a .316 rate, joining sophomore Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) with 10 kills. Junior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) added 42 assists for her sixth game of the season with 40-plus helpers.
The third and deciding set saw the Wolverines build a slim lead midway through the frame, holding on as late as 20-19 before the Beavers put together an 8-3 run down the stretch to put away the Maize and Blue, 25-23.
Neither team was able to create much separation in the second set. Oregon State was only able to create separation of more than two points twice, at 23-20 and the final of 25-22. Trailing by three late, Rood struck twice on the right side with heavy-handed attacks to pull U-M back within one. The surge was not enough, however, as OSU finished off the second set on successive plays.
Michigan jumped on the Beavers in the first set, opening up a 12-2 lead. Paz and Rood started the game perfect in their first three and four attacks, respectively, to give U-M the early lead. OSU began a long comeback, culminating in a 16-16 tie. The teams then exchanged leads up to an Oregon State game point with the Wolverines trailing, 24-22. The Maize and Blue was able to stave off three decisive points before OSU put away the set.
The Wolverines return to action this Friday (Sept. 25) when they open Big Ten play at Indiana. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at University Gymnasium in Bloomington, Ind., with MGoBlue.com providing live stats and a live blog.
