ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team used 12 total blocks and double-digit kills from three Wolverines in opening Big Ten play with a 3-1 win over Indiana Friday night (Sept. 21) in Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-19, 16-25, 25-20 and 25-21.

Junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) had her seventh double-double of the season, recording 13 kills and 11 digs against the Hoosiers. Junior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and fifth-year senior Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Prep) had 10 kills apiece. Freshman Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had a match-high 17 digs and sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 35 assists and 11 digs, while junior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) led Michigan with six total blocks.

The Wolverines used the serve of Morales and four kills apiece from Toon and Erwin to take the first set. With the Wolverines down 2-1, Morales lifted the Wolverines on a 5-0 run, capped by an Erwin kill. The Wolverines went up 9-5 on a Toon kill and made it 13-7 on a solo block from freshman Krystalyn Goode (River Falls, Wis./Nicolet). Indiana cut the lead to 15-11, but Michigan went on a 4-0 run with Morales' serve as a Hoosier attack error made it 19-11 U-M. Indiana pulled to within four at 23-19, but a Toon kill and Hoosier attack error gave the first set to the Wolverines.

Indiana hit .275 and held Michigan to a .000 hitting percentage to take the second set. The Wolverines went up 5-3 on an Indiana attack error, but the Hoosiers took an 11-6 lead on a kill from Amelia Anderson. An assisted block from Goode and McElheny cut the lead to 11-10 and a McElheny kill tied the set at 12. Erwin's kill made it 14-all, but Indiana went on a 9-1 run to give IU a 23-15 advantage. Indiana ended the set on a service ace, tying the match at one going into the break.

Michigan trailed 12-7 and 15-11 in set three before making a comeback. Toon served seven straight points as a McElheny kill gave Michigan a 19-16 lead. McElheny and Goode had two kills apiece in that run. Cross' kill gave U-M a 21-17 lead and a termination from Dannemiller made it 23-20. Toon's kill at set point put the Wolverines ahead going into the fourth set.

Michigan scored the first three points of set four, but Indiana came back to tie it at seven. Tied at 10, Michigan rattled off a pair of points with kills from McElheny and Erwin. Michigan made it 16-13 on an Indiana attack error, but the Hoosiers kept it close until a block from Erwin and Cross gave the Maize and Blue a 22-19 lead. An Indiana bad set gave Michigan match point and blocks from Dannemiller and Cross put Michigan in the win column in its first Big Ten match of 2012.

Michigan and Indiana both had 12 blocks on the night. The Wolverines hit .162, including .265 in the third set, while Indiana had a .137 hitting percentage.

Michigan ends its five-match homestand this Saturday (Sept. 22) against No. 17 Purdue. The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
