ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team had a .429 hitting percentage and made just five errors in downing Maryland, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-17), in match four of the Michigan Invitational Friday night (Sept. 21) in Cliff Keen Arena..
Senior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) hit .722 on the night, garnering 13 kills with no errors on 18 attack attempts. She also had seven total blocks. Seniors Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) had eight kills apiece, while junior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 21 assists and seven digs.
Michigan hit a blistering .480 in the match's first set to take a 25-17 decision. A Terrapin attack error started a 5-0 Wolverine run that was capped on a Dannemiller kill. The Wolverines went on top 10-6 on Toon's termination and made it 14-9 after two straight Maryland errors. The Terrapins cut the lead to 18-14, before U-M pulled away. Freshman Abby Cole's (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) kill at 20-14 forced Maryland to call time. Sophomore Krystalyn Goode's (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) kill made it 22-15, and Cross chipped in on a block with Cole and a kill to end the set.
The Wolverines hit better than .400 for the second straight set (.483) to go to the locker room with a 2-0 advantage. The set was tied as late as 7-all, before Erwin capped a 3-0 U-M run with a termination. Michigan went up 13-9 on Cross' kill and took a 17-12 lead after a Terp attack error. Maryland cut the lead to 18-16, but the Wolverines scored seven of the set's last nine points. Cross had two kills and a block assist with Dannemiller for Michigan's final three points.
The Maize and Blue held Maryland to a .116 hitting percentage in the final set. Cross joined Erwin for a block to put U-M up, 6-2. It was 10-5 after an Erwin kill and 13-7 on Cole's solo block. Michigan went up 17-10 on another assisted block from Cross and Erwin and made it 20-11 on Toon's termination. Michigan set up match point after a kill from sophomore Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and closed out the match on a kill from Cross with an assist to sophomore Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis).
The Wolverines had 11 team blocks and three service aces on the night, two from sophomore Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union).
The Wolverines conclude the non-conference portion of the regular-season schedule on Saturday night (Sept. 21) against No. 24 Ohio in the Michigan Invitational. That match starts at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
