BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Buoyed by 14 kills from sophomore Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) and 11 from senior Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph), the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team swept Indiana, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-13), in the Big Ten opener on Friday night (Sept. 23) at University Gymnasium.
Senior/junior Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf) chipped in eight kills and senior Courtney Fletcher (Johns Creek, Ga./Northview) went for six as Michigan hit .358 to Indiana's .100 in the match. Freshman Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) handed out 37 assists and senior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) picked up 14 digs.
With the teams going point for point in the first set, an Indiana service error at 14-14 ignited a four-point Michigan run. U-M used another two errors from the Hoosiers, along with an Erwin kill, to take an 18-14 lead. Michigan kept the cushion for the rest of the set, grabbing a 25-20 win in the frame. U-M hit just .207 in the set but held Indiana to a .129 attack percentage as the Wolverines tallied 14 digs and 3.0 blocks.
Holding a 10-8 lead in the early going of the second, U-M used a 4-1 run to stake a 14-9 lead. U-M allowed the Hoosiers to score just seven more points in the set for the 25-16 triumph. The Maize and Blue used five kills each from Hunt and Erwin to hit .353 for the set to Indiana's .074.
Michigan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set and did not let up in a 25-13 win. Erwin put down six kills in the frame with the Wolverines committing just one error to hit .500 in the set. Hunt, Fletcher and McElheny each totaled three kills as 12 Wolverines saw the floor in the final set.
The Wolverines wrap up weekend play tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 24) at No. 13 Purdue at 7 p.m.
