STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- For the second straight night, the 10th-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team went into the locker room tied at a set apiece, but the Wolverines fell at top-ranked Penn State 3-1 Saturday night (Sept. 28) inside Rec Hall. Set scores were 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-17.

Senior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) had a season-high 19 kills to go along with three blocks. Freshman Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) added five blocks.

Michigan took an early 3-2 lead in the first set off a Penn State attack error. The Nittany Lions came back and went ahead 8-5 on a PSU block. Erwin cut the Penn State lead to 9-8 after back-to-back kills but a 5-1 Nittany Lion run was capped by a block. PSU went ahead 16-10 off of Ariel Scott's termination. Michigan scored the next two points as blocks from Cole and sophomore Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) made it 16-12. A Toon service ace cut Penn State's lead to 17-14, but the Nittany Lions scored the next three points as the Wolverines called timeout after a Megan Courtney kill. Penn State closed the set on an 8-2 run as a Michigan blocking error gave the Nittany Lions the 25-16 advantage.

Michigan led for most of the second set. Cole's solo block and a Goode kill on an overpass made it 4-2 Wolverines. Another Goode termination made it 6-4. Penn State came back to take an 8-7 lead on Katie Slay's block but the Wolverines fought back to lead 10-9 on Erwin's kill. The Maize and Blue had a 14-12 lead on a Nittany Lion error. Erwin's kill gave Michigan a 16-14 lead and back-to-back blocks from Toon and Cross made it 19-15 Wolverines. PSU went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 19, capped by a Deja McClendon kill, but the Maize and Blue answered with a 5-0 run of its own. The run was highlighted by a pair of Toon kills and an assisted block by Toon and Goode. Michigan earned the second set on Toon's kill at 25-20.

The Wolverines led 3-1 in the third set on a Goode kill and 4-2 after a Toon termination. The Nittany Lions went on a 4-1 run to take the 6-5 lead but back-to-back blocks by the Maize and Blue tied the set at seven. Penn State took an 11-8 lead after a Slay kill and went up 14-11 on a Courtney block. Michigan trailed 15-12 after an Erwin kill but PSU went on a 4-1 run capped by a Courtney kill. PSU earned set point after a Scott kill and won the set on a Michigan attack error.

Penn State took the fourth set's first two points on Hancock service aces and led 4-1 on blocks by Courtney and Slay. Toon had kills at 5-3 and 6-4, but another PSU block gave the Nittany Lions an 11-6 lead. PSU expanded its lead to 14-7 on Scott's kill and 16-7 after Scott joined Slay on a block. Scott's termination put PSU up 19-9. Cross heated up and had kills at 19-12 and 21-15. Toon's kill cut the lead to 23-17, but kills from Courtney and Scott ended the match.
