ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team used 11.0 blocks and 46 digs to hold Iowa to a .000 attack percentage in a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-15, 25-17) of the Hawkeyes on Friday night (Sept. 30) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Leading Michigan's offense with 12 kills each were sophomore Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) and senior/junior Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf). Freshman Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) handed out 32 assists and picked up nine digs for the Wolverines, who hit .217 for the match. Senior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) recorded 12 digs for the defense, followed by sophomore Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) with a career-high 11 digs.
Down by as many as four in the first set, the Wolverines slowly climbed out of the hole, taking an 18-17 lead off a Dannemiller kill. U-M held the lead the rest of the way, using a service error by the Hawkeyes for its first set point at 24-21. An Iowa kill when Toon was whistled for being in the net kept the Hawkeyes alive for another point, but McElheny delivered her sixth kill to end the set for the Maize and Blue at 25-22.
It was all Michigan in second frame as the Wolverines held Iowa to a -.079 attack percentage on the strength of 4.0 blocks and 23 digs. With Michigan holding a 16-14 lead, an Erwin kill ignited a 9-1 run for the Maize and Blue for the 25-15 win. Erwin paced the offense with seven kills in the frame.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 7-2 lead, before Iowa rattled off seven of the next nine points to tie the frame 9-9. Tied once again at 11-11, three consecutive Iowa attack errors put the Wolverines on top for good at 14-11. U-M limited the Hawkeyes to just six points the rest of the set for the 25-17 victory. Michigan once again held the Iowa offense to a negative attack percentage at -.031.
Michigan returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 1) against No. 7 Nebraska at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed online at ESPN3.com and shown on a tape delay on ESPN2 on Sunday (Oct. 2) at 2:30 p.m.
