STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team could not overcome 17 attack and nine service errors in a 3-0 setback at No. 4 Penn State (25-20, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday night (Oct. 2) at Rec Hall.
Junior outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) led the Wolverine offense with 13 kills, while freshman middle blocker Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ont./Birchmount Park Collegiate) and freshman outside hitter Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) both chipped in seven. Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) notched a double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs, with junior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) recording a match-high 14 digs.
A Hunt kill in the third set brought U-M back to within 9-8, but Penn State rattled off five consecutive points to take a 14-8 lead. The Maize and Blue forced a PSU timeout at 23-19, but the Nittany Lions scored two of the next three points to win the match with a 25-20 third-set victory.
In a second set that featured 11 ties and three lead changes, Cathy Auilico's serve at 21-all just rolled over the net for an ace to give PSU a lead it never lost. Michigan stayed alive on the first set point, but a Nittany Lion kill off the Michigan block gave the home team a 25-22 win.
In the first set, back-to-back kills from Hunt and redshirt sophomore right side Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf) brought U-M back within a point, 19-18, before Penn State ripped off six straight to take set point at 24-18. The Wolverines fought off two set points on terminations from McElheny and Zimmerman, but the Nittany Lions took a 25-20 first-set decision.
The Wolverines return to Cliff Keen Arena for four consecutive matches, starting with Wisconsin on Friday (Oct. 8) at 7 p.m. It is the annual pink match, with proceeds going to U-M's Women's Health program.
