Michigan Wraps Up Road Trip with Loss at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell in three sets to Wisconsin Sunday afternoon (Oct. 7) at the Wisconsin Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 as the Wolverines fell in three for the first time this season.

Junior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) had a team-best 10 kills and two blocks for the Wolverines. Freshman Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had 12 digs while sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) added 27 assists. Fifth-year senior Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf Prep) had three assisted blocks for the Maize and Blue.

Junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) had six kills in the opening set, but the Badgers hit .250 on their way to a 25-20 win. Michigan took a 6-4 lead on a Badger attack error and went up 7-5 on Erwin's termination. Wisconsin tied the set at nine on a kill from Julie Mikaelsen and took a 14-11 lead on a Wolverine attack error. The Maize and Blue came back to tie the set at 15 on a service ace from junior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) and went up 16-15 on a Cross kill, but Wisconsin answered and took a 21-19 lead on a Badger service ace. Wisconsin went up 23-19 on a block and took the set on a kill by Crystal Graff.

Wisconsin hit .355 and held U-M to a .079 hitting percentage in winning the second set. The Badgers built an 8-3 lead on a Wolverine attack error. Michigan came back to tie the set at 11 on a Wisconsin attack error, but the Badgers went on a 6-1 run after that point, capped by a Mary Ording kill. Back-to-back Badger blocks put UW up 23-16 and Wisconsin won the set on a kill from Courtney Thomas. Freshman Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga./Walton) had four kills and four digs in that set.

Wisconsin opened the third set up 4-1 but Michigan chipped away, eventually tying it at 12 on a Toon kill. The Badgers scored four of the next five points, then took a 20-14 lead on back-to-back kills from Alexis Mitchell. Cross' kill cut Wisconsin's lead to 23-19, but the Badgers took the set 25-20 and the match on an Ording kill.

Michigan hit .144, compared to .327 for the Badgers. Mitchell led Wisconsin with 14 kills. Michigan also had three service aces and six total blocks on the day.

Michigan will now play eight of its next 10 matches at the friendly confines of Cliff Keen Arena, starting on Wednesday, Oct. 8, against Illinois. That match will start at 8 p.m., and is televised on the Big Ten Network.


• Today's loss was the first straight-set defeat for the Wolverines this season. Michigan is now 8-1 in three-set matches.

Jennifer Cross led the team in kills for the fourth time this season and the ninth time in her career. Cross had 10 kills in the match.

Tiffany Morales had double-digit digs for 12th straight match and the 16th match this season. Morales led Michigan with 12 digs.

•Michigan is now tied with Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin with 2-4 conference marks.
