Lexi Erwin earned her 11th double-double of the season with 22 kills and 14 digs. Erwin also had 20-plus kills for the fifth time this year and the seventh time in her career.
Michigan is now 3-3 in five-set matches.
Michigan has now played a top-ranked team 15 times in school history. Michigan has yet to defeat a No. 1 team, but this was just the second time the Wolverines have taken a No. 1 team to five sets. Michigan fell to Penn State in five on Oct. 16, 2009, when the Nittany Lions were No. 1.
Michigan is the only team in the Big Ten to take Penn State to five sets in the first half of the conference season. Penn State had only lost three sets in Big Ten play coming into tonight's match.
Lexi Dannemiller had 55 assists on the night as she earned 50-plus assists for the fifth time this season and the 17th time in her career. Dannemiller was four assists away from tying a season high, which was set Sept. 1 against Arkansas.
Michigan had five players in double figures in digs for the first time since Nov. 18, 2011, against Northwestern. In tonight's game, Ally Sabol (18), Lexi Dannemiller (14), Lexi Erwin (14), Tiffany Morales (14) and Molly Toon (10) had double figures in digs.
Ally Sabol set a season high in digs with 18 on the night. Her previous season high was 17 against Illinois on Oct. 10.
