IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team won the first set before dropping the next three in a 3-1 loss (20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23) at Iowa on Saturday night (Nov. 13) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Junior outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) led the Wolverine offense with 19 kills and 12 digs, while freshman outside hitter Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) put down a career-best 11 and junior middle blocker Courtney Fletcher (Duluth, Ga./Northview) went for nine in the loss. Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) handed out 54 assists with 10 digs and seven kills as the defensive duo of junior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) and senior defensive specialist Maggie Busch (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Christian) combined for 29 digs.
In the fourth, a kill by Fletcher out of the middle tied the set at 18-all, before Iowa scored two consecutive points on a kill and attack error by redshirt sophomore right side Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf) to take the lead for good. Michigan staved off one match point on a Fletcher kill to bring the Wolverines back within a point at 24-23, but Iowa recorded a kill off the U-M block for the 25-23 victory.
Down 22-18 in the third, U-M scored three consecutive points on back-to-back kills from Hunt and one from McElheny to get within a point at 22-21. Hunt's attack sailed long on the ensuing point to put Iowa on top for good, 23-21. The Wolverines saved one set point at 24-21 on Hunt's termination down the line, but Iowa made good on the next point for a 25-22 win.
The teams traded points for most of the second set as neither side held more than a two-point lead throughout a frame that featured 17 ties. Tied at 23 after Fletcher and Zimmerman combined on a block, Iowa scored the last two points of the set on a kill and a block for a 25-23 victory.
Deadlocked at 15-15 in the opening frame, Michigan scored three straight off a Hunt tip kill, a Hunt service ace and a slide kill from freshman middle blocker Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ont./Birchmount Park Collegiate) to take an 18-15 lead. U-M kept the advantage the rest of the set, closing it out on Donhoff's ace for a 25-20 win. Hunt's six kills and eight digs from Busch paced the Wolverines in the first.
U-M returns to Cliff Keen Arena for its final two home matches of the season next weekend, hosting Purdue on Friday (Nov. 19) and Indiana on Saturday (Nov. 20). Both matches start at 7 p.m.
