EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team fell, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23, at Michigan State on Wednesday evening (Nov. 24) in front of a record crowd of 6,824 at the Breslin Center. Michigan hit just .140 with 36 kills in the loss, while Michigan State recorded 14.0 blocks.
Junior outside hitter Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) paced the offense with 11 kills as the only Wolverine to hit double figures. Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) handed out 29 assists to go with 10 digs and seven kills, while junior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) recorded 17 digs, her 16th straight match in double figures.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the third set, but MSU answered with an 8-4 run to take its first lead of the set at 8-7. The teams went back and forth until an MSU kill out of the middle broke a 20-20 tie, giving the Spartans the lead for good. Michigan staved off two match points on an attack error by MSU and a kill from redshirt sophomore right side Claire McElheny (Westfield, Ind./Brebeuf), but a slide kill on the next point gave the Spartans a 25-23 third-set win.
Michigan dropped the second set, 25-23, after a 24-minute delay in the middle of the set when the lights went out in the Breslin Center. Trailing 20-19 at the time of the stoppage, Michigan used a Hunt kill to knot the set at 20 when play resumed. The teams traded points for a 23-all deadlock, but MSU used a Michigan service error and a block for two straight points and the win, taking a 2-0 lead into the break.
U-M struggled offensively in the first set, hitting into 7.0 MSU blocks for a .077 attack percentage. Facing a 23-16 deficit, Michigan ripped off four consecutive points to force a Michigan State timeout at 23-20. The Spartans took set point on the next play on the outside kill, but junior middle blocker Courtney Fletcher (Duluth, Ga./Northview) followed with a kill to keep U-M alive at 24-21. MSU then ended it on the ensuing point, using another kill on the outside for a 25-21 victory.
Michigan concludes the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 27) with a match at Northwestern. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CST.
