ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team, which advanced to the national semifinals for the first time in program history, was selected as the recipient of the December BASF Team Chemistry MVP Award. The team will be recognized for its accomplishments at the men's basketball game Thursday night (Jan. 24) vs. Purdue at 7 p.m. inside Crisler Center.
BASF, the world's leading chemical company, is the creator of the Team Chemistry MVP Award. BASF, which has facilities in Wyandotte and Southfield, Mich., will recognize one group in the athletic department from across all sports each month that represents the best qualities of team chemistry and its importance both on and off the field.
Led by 14th-year head coach Mark Rosen, the team had a December to remember in the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines advanced to its fifth-ever regional semifinal after wins over Tennessee and Louisville in the first and second rounds in Louisville, Ky. Michigan faced Big Ten foe Michigan State in the regional semis, defeating the Spartans in straight sets in Berkeley, Calif., to advance to just its second regional final in school history. The Maize and Blue faced Stanford and after dropping the first set, won three sets in a row to book its trip to Louisville, Ky., and the national semifinals. Michigan went to the limit with eventual national champion Texas before falling in five sets.
Juniors Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) and Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) each earned All-America honors by the AVCA. Cross garnered third team honors, while Erwin was named an honorable mention. Both Cross and Erwin also were named to the All-Big Ten team, while freshman Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) was a unanimous selection to the league's All-Freshman team.
U-M had five members of the team earn Academic All-Big Ten honors for carrying at least a 3.0 grade-point average as a varsity letterwinner: Cross, Erwin, sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), senior/junior Brittany Lee (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and sophomore/freshman Olivia Reed (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell).
