COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- University of Michigan volleyball incoming freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) is one of 18 players that has been named to the U.S. Women's Junior National Training Team roster, USA Volleyball announced yesterday (Tuesday, May 6). Knop will be competing for one of 12 roster spots for the NORCECA Women's U-20 Continental Championship set for July 6-14 in Guatemala.
Knop, a 5-8 defensive specialist, helped LaSalle High School in Pasadena, Calif., to league championships all four years and a CIF Southern Section Division 1A championship her junior and senior seasons. Knop was a MaxPreps All-California first team selection in 2012 and an All-Area first team honoree by the Pasadena Star News. She was named the No. 59 Senior Ace and a Defensive Dandies second teamer her sophomore year by Prepvolleyball.com. Knop plays four sports (volleyball, basketball, softball and golf) at LaSalle, earning all-area honors in softball (first team) and basketball (second team) and second team all-league honors in golf her junior season.
The WJNTT, comprised of athletes born in 1996 and 1997, will hold its second tryout May 29 to June 1 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. From the tryout, the top 12 players will be selected for the U.S. Women's Junior National Team (WJNT) that will compete in the NORCECA Women's U-20 Continental Championship. Before leaving for Guatemala, the WJNT will train in Minneapolis from June 29-July 4.
Knop will see a familiar face in Guatemala if she makes the team. U-M assistant coach Erin Virtue is an assistant coach for the U.S. Women's Junior National Team. Knop also would join Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) in playing this summer for USA Volleyball. Dannemiller is on the U.S. Collegiate National Team - China Tour, while Cole is on the U.S. Collegiate National Team for the USAV Girls' Junior National Championships.
