ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball program and head coach Mark Rosen have announced that the team is taking a 13-day tour of Brazil and Argentina starting Friday, May 31, and finishing on Thursday, June 13. The Wolverines can take a foreign tour every four years as U-M visited Brazil in the summer of 2009.
"We're very excited as a program to be able to have the opportunity to go on an overseas trip," Rosen said. "We did it four years ago when we took our team to Brazil, and we had a great experience, so we've been looking forward to this year. We try to do it in a year when we have a large returning group. It makes sense because your freshmen can't go, so we had 13 returning players who are able to go on the trip this summer. I do think you see an advantage for the teams that go on these trips because they get more volleyball. We get an extra month of volleyball and great competition against really strong teams internationally, so we certainly look at this as a way to vault our program to that next level.
"Beyond that, though, it's a great educational opportunity," Rosen continued. We're in an institution that we're here to educate our student-athletes, not just in sport but in life. A great opportunity for them to see another culture, experience other opportunities around the world. We've decided this year to do the combination of Argentina and Brazil, because I think they are two very different cultures. We're very excited about it; this is also a team that will travel well -- they're fun, and they're a good group. I think they will travel very well and really engage in the experience, not just the volleyball side of it."
Before the Wolverines head to South America, they will have 10 practices in Ann Arbor. That began on Wednesday, May 15. The team will then board a flight for Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Friday, May 31. The Maize and Blue will spend six days in Argentina and board a flight for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday, June 6. Michigan will spend a week in Brazil before beginning the return to Michigan on Wednesday, June 12. The Wolverines will land in Detroit the morning of Thursday, June 13.
A full itinerary of matches and tours the Wolverines will take will be posted when it becomes available. There will be blogs and photos from the trip posted on MGoBlue.com throughout the tour.
Michigan returns 13 letterwinners from last year's 27-12 squad that advanced to the national semifinals for the first time in program history. The Maize and Blue opens the 2013 schedule on Friday, Aug. 30, against Clemson at the Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio. First serve is scheduled for noon.
