LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team is ranked seventh in the American Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, the organization announced today (Monday, Aug. 12). This is the highest ranking for U-M in the preseason poll in program history and the fifth consecutive year the Wolverines have been ranked before the season begins. Michigan's previous preseason high was 12th in 2010.
The Wolverines, who ended last season a program-best fifth in the AVCA poll, earned 1,120 points and are one of seven Big Ten Conference teams in the top 25. Defending NCAA champion Texas earned 55 first-place votes and tops the poll. Penn State, Stanford, Southern Cal and Washington round out the top five, while Michigan joined Minnesota (No. 6) and Nebraska (No. 10) as Big Ten teams in the top 10.
U-M returns 13 letterwinners and five starters plus the libero from last year's team that went 27-12 and advanced to the NCAA national semifinals. Seniors Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) and Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) return after earning All-America third team and honorable mention recognition, respectively, by the AVCA, and junior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) was named to the All-Berkeley Regional team.
Michigan has eight opponents who are ranked in the preseason top 25. Six of the opponents are on the Big Ten schedule (No. 2 Penn State, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 14 Michigan State, No. 16 Purdue and No. 23 Ohio State). The Maize and Blue also will face No. 8 Oregon in Cliff Keen Arena on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m., and play No. 18 Florida State at the Aggie Invitational in College Station, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. CDT.
Michigan will hold its annual Maize and Blue game on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena. U-M then starts the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, against Clemson at the Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio. That match will start at noon. The first home match for the Wolverines will be at 7 p.m Friday, Sept. 6, against Oregon State as part of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge.
