The first Q&A of the 2012 University of Michigan volleyball season goes to junior Lexi Erwin. The Wolverines will open up the 2012 season this Friday and Saturday (Aug. 24-25) at the Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo. Michigan will face Nicholls State Friday at 10:30 a.m. CDT and North Florida Friday at 4:30 p.m. CDT. U-M wraps up the tournament Saturday with matches against Virginia Tech at 2:30 p.m. CDT and host Missouri at 7 p.m. CDT.
Erwin, a native of Spring, Texas, returns for her third season in the Maize and Blue. The Academic All-Big Ten selection started 34 matches on the outside last season, totaling double-digit kills in 22 contests. Erwin was named the Most Valuable Player of last year's Michigan/adidas Invitational and had nine double-doubles (digs/kills) in 2011.
Erwin talks about the Wolverines' preseason, how she's improved from last season and her obsession with a certain Mexican fast-food restaurant.
Q: How has preseason gone for yourself and the team?
A: For myself, it's been a lot better than the first two years. I think this is the least nervous or anxious I've been. It's been pretty smooth so far, so it's good. And for the team, it's going really well. The freshmen have connected with us really well. They have great personalities and they're definitely not as nervous as I was my freshman year. They're very connected.
Q: During the preseason, you get a lot of work in the gym, but you also have time to bond with your teammates. How has that gone so far?
A: We are actually doing Big Sister-Little Sister this year. That's helped a lot just because there are so many newcomers on the team. We have to help them get to know the rules and what you can and can't do. So, it's been easier to help one person individually than everyone at once.
Q: What did you do over the summer or even in the spring to prepare yourself for this season?
A: During the spring, we worked really hard. It was just six of us that could actually play. We did a lot of individual work and tried to make a core group that was experienced when the freshmen came in. This summer we had workouts so I stayed here and worked out with (strength and conditioning coach) Mike (Favre). It's helped so much.
Q: How excited are you for the season to start?
A: I'm really excited. I'm excited to finally play a game. I think our team's going to be really good this year.
TV show ... I don't really watch TV, but right now, I've been watching Gossip Girl and The Office on Netflix.
Musical artist ... I'd say Rihanna.
Movie ... My favorite movie is Bruce Almighty.
Vacation spot ... My favorite vacation spot would be Cancun. I go with my family a lot because I am from Texas.
Favorite class at U-M ... I actually took it freshman year, sustainability and housing. It's about how to make where you live more sustainable and it was really interesting, so I'd say that was my favorite.
