OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Senior middle blocker Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) of the University of Michigan volleyball team has been named as one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award for collegiate volleyball, it was announced today (Wednesday, Aug. 28).
Cross, who was named to the 14-player Preseason All-Big Ten team in August, returns for her senior season after averaging 2.60 kills and 1.24 blocks per set in 2012. The Scarborough, Ontario, native was named to the AVCA All-America third team and the All-Big Ten team her junior season, playing in all 39 matches while leading the team in blocks in 28 contests. The All-Berkeley Regional selection had a career-high 18 kills in a four-set match against Northwestern (Nov. 16, 2012) and registered a career-high nine blocks in a five-set contest against Western Kentucky (Sept. 14, 2012). Cross is just 54 total blocks and 64 block assists away from both school records.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence -- community, classroom, character and competition. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Division I Championships in December.
Michigan starts the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, against Clemson at the Xavier Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio. That match starts at noon. The first home match for the Wolverines will be on Friday, Sept. 6, against Oregon State as part of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. The match starts at 7 p.m.
