The University of Michigan volleyball team (2-1) will open its home schedule this weekend as the Wolverines take part in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Cliff Keen Arena. Michigan opens the home slate on Friday, Sept. 5, against No. 19 Duke (3-0). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Maize and Blue then faces No. 20 North Carolina (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m. The Wolverines are coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Arkansas Invitational, defeating Stephen F. Austin and Tennessee State before falling to host Arkansas in five sets.

Fifth-Set Comeback Propels Michigan to Victory over Duke
Down 8-5 in the fifth set, No. 22 Michigan rallied to take victory, defeating Duke, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13, in the final match of the Coke/Michigan Invitational.

Duke - The Blue Devils opened their 2014 season by winning their own Duke Invitational, defeating North Florida, High Point and Furman. Jeme Obeime, Alyse Whitaker and Sasha Karelov all were named to the All- Tournament team at the conclusion of the tournament. Obeime had 16 kills in the Furman win, while Karelov had a match-high 19 digs. Duke hosted the first and second rounds of last year's NCAA Tournament, earning the No. 16 seed. It was the 18th tournament appearance in school history.

North Carolina - The Tarheels went 2-1 in the Illini Classic, defeating Southern Illinois and Long Beach State before falling to host Illinois in three sets. Leigh Andrew averaged 3.00 kills per set while Ece Taner had 16 digs in the Illinois match. North Carolina is returning 14 letterwinners from last year's team that went 27-5 overall, 16-4 in the ACC, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Big Ten/ACC Challenge Series Records
Michigan leads the all-time series with Duke 2-1. This will be the second time in three years the two teams will meet in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines came away with a five-set win on Sept. 15, 2012, at the Coke/Michigan Invitational. Lexi Erwin led four Wolverines in double figures in kill with 18 while Lexi Dannemiller had 56 assists. Tiff any Morales added 15 digs in the win ... Michigan and North Carolina both have won twice in the all-time series. This will be the first match between the two teams since the 1998 season. Michigan picked up a three-set win over the Tarheels in Ann Arbor on Sept. 11, 1998.

Challenge Accepted!
Michigan and Michigan State will host Duke and North Carolina this weekend in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It is the first of two straight weekends the Wolverines will play in a two-match set against teams in a Power 5 conference. It is also the second straight week a Big Ten team will host a Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Minnesota hosted Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Louisville last weekend.

Michigan continues its 42nd season of play this weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Wolverines have an all-time record of 671-605-5 (not including two years in Canada) heading into the 2014 campaign. Michigan has 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, five berths to the "Sweet 16," an Elite Eight run in 2009 and a Final Four berth in 2012.

Home Openers
Michigan has won 16 straight home openers, with its last loss dating back to Sept. 5, 1997, in a four-set defeat at the hands of Florida State. Last season, the Wolverines defeated Oregon State in four sets in the home lidlifter.

Big Ten Leaders
Sophomore Abby Cole leads the Big Ten in hitting percentage (.512) and is tied for sixth in kills per set (3.83/s) ... Junior Carly Warner is seventh in the league in assists per set (10.50/s) ... Junior Tiff any Morales is tied for ninth in the conference in digs per set (3.75/s) ... Junior Krystalyn Goode is 10th in the Big Ten in blocks per set (1.25/s) ... As a team, Michigan is third in opponent's hitting percentage (.118) and fourth in digs per set (15.67/s).

U-M Rookies See Court in Season's First Week
Freshmen Caroline Knop, Katherine Mahlke and Adeja Lambert all saw their fi rst action as a Wolverine in the Arkansas Invitational Aug. 29-30. Knop started all three matches for the Maize and Blue and averaged 1.92 kills and 2.58 digs a set. She had 16 digs in the five-set match against the Razorbacks. Mahlke made a pair of starts and posted a double-double (12 kills, 13 digs) in the Stephen F. Austin win, becoming the first player since Lexi Zimmerman in 2007 to record a double-double in the first match of her career. Lambert had 11 kills against both Stephen F. Austin and Arkansas and averaged 2.42 kills a set.

Trio Named to All-Tourney Team in Arkansas
Junior Tiffany Morales was named the Arkansas Invitational's Most Outstanding Libero while sophomore Abby Cole and junior Carly Warner earned all-tournament team honors on Aug. 30. Morales averaged 3.75 digs a set and had 21 in the Arkansas match. Cole set a career high with 19 kills in the Stephen F. Austin match while recording double-digit kills in all three matches. Warner averaged 10.50 assists a set and 52 in the season opener against Stephen F. Austin.

Up Next
Michigan will face Oregon State and Oregon in the Pac- 12/Big Ten Challenge on Sept. 12-13. The Wolverines will play Oregon State on Friday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 p.m. PDT. in Corvallis, Ore. That match will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. Michigan then plays Oregon on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. PDT in Eugene, Ore.
