The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team opens its home schedule this weekend as part of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. The Maize and Blue and Michigan State will both host Oregon State and Oregon this weekend in the first year of the Challenge. On Friday, Sept. 6, U-M faces Oregon State at 7 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena. In advance of the season opener, we asked sophomore libero Tiffany Morales about her second preseason at U-M, the excitement of the home opener and the Wolverine defense.
Q: How good did it feel to play an opponent other than your teammates this past weekend at Xavier?
A: We were so excited to play another team. Playing each other is so difficult because we know each other's tendencies and everything is so hard to get a kill. So playing another team was great to discover their tendencies and to also be able to mix it up and know that they don't know us yet.
Q: What was the biggest difference for you this preseason compared to your freshman year?
A: I was more comfortable in preseason this year. I knew what was going on, and I was used to the environment. I love the way that felt in the gym.
Q: Everyone returns on defense from last year's Final Four team. How will that chemistry help the back row succeed this season?
A: I think with the experience we have, we're going to be very strong defensively and in serve-receive because we communicate really well together and we all have the same type of chemistry.
Q: How excited are you to play at home in front of a big crowd this weekend?
A: I'm really excited. My dad's going to be here. I'm really excited to play in front of our fans again, have a big crowd and play in our arena.
Q: Since you play every Saturday, you normally don't get to go to the football game, but you get to this week. How excited are you for that?
A: It's going to be nice to go to. It's a big game -- Notre Dame -- and since we don't get to go to a lot and we have a game before, we're all going to be very motivated to win and get ready for the game.
