PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan junior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and freshman middle blocker/right side Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) have been named the Big Ten Conference's Volleyball Setter and Freshman of the Week, respectively, it was announced this afternoon (Monday, Sept. 9). The Wolverine duo helped the Maize and Blue to a sweep of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge (Sept. 6-7).
Dannemiller had another solid week as the Wolverines' setter in U-M's two wins over Oregon State and No. 12 Oregon in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge. The junior had 46 assists, three kills, six digs and three service aces in the four-set win over Oregon State on Friday night. She also helped the Maize and Blue to a .341 hitting percentage. Then in the straight-set win over Oregon, Dannemiller had 34 assists to go along with three kills, six digs and a block. Dannemiller is averaging 11.43 assists per set, which is third in the Big Ten.
Cole had an impressive home debut for the Wolverines in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge at Cliff Keen Arena. Cole, who leads the Big Ten in hitting percentage and is sixth in blocks per set, had nine block assists in the four-set win over Oregon State on Friday night. It is the most blocks for a Wolverine since Jennifer Cross had nine in a five-set match against Western Kentucky on Sept. 14, 2012. Cole also led the Wolverines with 16 kills and a .682 hitting percentage (16-1-22), which is the fourth-highest percentage for a single match in program history. That effort also tied a Michigan season high for kills in a match. Cole again led the Maize and Blue in kills, as she had 12 terminations in a straight-set win over No. 12 Oregon on Saturday. She hit .500 for the match (12-2-20) and added a pair of blocks, including a solo block. Cole is averaging 3.31 kills and 1.23 blocks per set.
Dannemiller earns her third career Setter of the Week honor. She was selected for the award on Nov. 5 and Nov. 12, 2012. Cole picks up her first Freshman of the Week honor, and Michigan earns its first two weekly awards of the 2013 season.
U-M travels to College Station, Texas, for three matches at the Texas A&M Invitational Sept. 13-14. The Wolverines open the tournament with Siena on Friday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. CDT.
