ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan freshman libero Tiffany Morales (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) has been named the Big Ten Conference's Volleyball Freshman and Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon (Oct. 1). Morales had a pair of 20-plus dig performances in road matches at Iowa (Sept. 28) and No. 6 Nebraska (Sept. 30).
Morales averaged 6.86 digs per set in the two matches for the Wolverines. In the three-set win at Iowa, Morales had 25 digs and nearly made it a double-double with nine assists at libero. She also did not have a reception error on a serve in 27 chances. She had nine digs apiece in the first and second sets in the win over the Hawkeyes and helped U-M hold Iowa to a .051 hitting percentage. In the match against No. 6 Nebraska, Morales had 23 digs in four sets, with a high of eight in set three. She also did not have a reception error in 21 chances. Morales had her third and fourth 20-plus dig performance of the season and the Iowa mark was just two off a career high, which was set in a five-set win over Arkansas (Sept. 1).
Morales earns Michigan's first Freshman of the Week honor since Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) earned it on Nov. 14, 2011. Morales also is Michigan's first Defensive Player of the Week since Lexi Zimmerman did the trick on Sept. 27, 2010.
In other Big Ten weekly awards, Purdue's Ariel Turner was named the Big Ten's Player of the Week, while Penn State's Micha Hancock earned Setter of the Week.
Michigan will continue its four-match roadtrip this Wednesday (Oct. 3) at Minnesota. The match will begin at 7 p.m. CDT and televised by the Big Ten Network.
