ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former Michigan volleyball head coach Sandy Vong and longtime academic leader for U-M student-athletes Shari Acho will be the 2012 recipients of Honorary Michigan letters. The Letterwinners M Club bestows Honorary M letters to those who have not earned an athletic letter at Michigan but have demonstrated outstanding service to the U-M athletic department.

Vong founded the Michigan men's club volleyball team in 1968 and the women's club team in 1971. In 1973, when the women's team gained varsity status, Vong became the head coach, a position he had for 11 seasons in Ann Arbor. Vong guided the Wolverines to 40 wins in 1981, which included the Big Ten Tournament championship, the AIAW regional championship and an eighth-place finish in the AIAW national championship. Vong coached AIAW All-Midwest Region and Big Ten All-Tournament team selections Alison Noble and Diane Ratnick, who both earned those honors in 1981. Vong won 177 matches as Michigan's head coach, which stood as a program high until current U-M coach Mark Rosen passed that mark in 2008.

Acho is in her 12th year in Michigan athletics, currently working as the director of the M-PACT (Michigan Professional and Career Transition) Program at U-M, which supports University of Michigan student-athletes as they discover, prepare for and transition to their lives after graduation. She also has worked as the associate athletic director of academic services, working specifically with the football team as its academic counselor. Prior to U-M, Acho worked six years at Michigan State as the assistant director of Student Athlete Support Services and learning specialist for all student-athletes.

Vong and Acho will be presented Michigan letter jackets at the Michigan Alumni Association Homecoming brunch on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. They will be joined by former U-M wrestler Mark Churella, who is being presented with the Ufer Award.

Any former coaches, letterwinners, alumni and friends interested in attending the homecoming brunch, which starts at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, can contact Mary Petrovich at 248-459-2020 or marypetrovich@comcast.net.
