Michigan Volleyball Central
The Michigan volleyball Q&A series continues with freshman libero Tiffany Morales. The Wolverines will host Alumnae Night Saturday (Oct. 13) against Northwestern. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., which is a change from the original schedule.
Morales, a native of Redondo Beach, Calif., played in all 21 matches for the Maize and Blue this season. She leads the team with 3.91 digs per set and had a career-high 27 digs in a five-set win over Arkansas (Sept. 1). Morales was named the Big Ten Freshman and Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1 after recording 48 digs in matches against Iowa and No. 6 Nebraska.
Morales sat down to talk about winning those awards, why she chose Michigan and how playing beach volleyball has helped her indoor game.
Q: Why did you choose Michigan?
A: I chose Michigan because I knew when I stepped on campus it just felt right. I didn't really think I was going to get the feeling from any other school. I thought I was going to have to choose by what they offered, like the dorm system, volleyball, the coaches, the players, but when I stepped onto this campus everything was right and it felt really good.
Q: We return to Cliff Keen Arena after playing four straight matches on the road. How excited are you to play in front of the home crowd?
A: I miss playing at home. It's great when we get the band here and the crowd gets going and all of our fellow athletes are cheering us on. Plus, we have home-court advantage.
Q: How did playing beach volleyball help your indoor game?
A: It can help by just reading and being tactical. You have to find ways to win, especially at my size in beach volleyball; a lot of girls are big. So that helps with the indoor game.
Q: What are the big differences between high school and college volleyball?
A: The speed and everyone has more than just one big hitter. In high school, it was just one big girl getting all of the balls, but here it's distributed.
Q: What was your reaction to winning Big Ten Freshman and Defensive Player of the Week?
A: I was very honored, and I worked for it with Mark and Leisa. They were a little bit on me about defense; they knew I could do a lot more and increase my range. And it just showed right after that week that I got the defensive award, which was great.
