The Michigan volleyball Q&A series continues with sophomore setter Lexi Dannemiller. The Wolverines will host in-state rival Michigan State Wednesday night (Oct. 17) at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena. It also is the annual Pink Match, as the Wolverines will wear pink jerseys. Donations will be accepted for the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer throughout the match.
Dannemiller, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, has played and started in 21 matches for the Maize and Blue this season. She is averaging 10.68 assists per set with a season high of 59 assists in the five-set win over Arkansas on Sept. 1. Dannemiller also has seven double-doubles on the year, including three straight from Sept. 28-Oct. 3.
Dannemiller sat down to talk about her summer trip to Kenya, why she became a setter and what her favorite class is at U-M.
Q: You made a trip this summer to Kenya to help build a school. How rewarding was that experience?
A: It was really rewarding. Not only did I get to help other people, but I got to learn about a completely new culture. It was a new experience that was a polar opposite of where I am now.
Q: What have you improved on as a setter from your freshman season to now?
A: I think technically I've gotten a lot better, skill-wise with defense and blocking. But also just having confidence in myself and being able to lead others while leading myself.
Q: What drew you to the setter position?
A: Actually, I wanted to be an outside hitter all my life, but my coaches told me, 'No, you should be a setter -- and if you want to make it in college, your height is perfect for a setter.' So I said, 'Okay, I'll do that,' and now I love it.
Q: The Big Ten boasts some of the best volleyball in the country. What is it like to play that competition day in and day out?
A: Playing every single day, it's like you can't take a day off. Every single game is hard, so that pushes you to work harder in practice every single day and just makes you better overall.
