ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan volleyball junior Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and senior Juliana Paz (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine University Division Academic All-District IV volleyball teams, announced Thursday (Nov. 5) by CoSIDA.
Zimmerman and Paz are the fifth and sixth student-athletes in U-M volleyball history to receive Academic All-District honors with Paz becoming the fourth second-team selection, joining Shareen Luze (1996), Erin Moore (2003) and Beth Karpiak (2008). Stesha Selsky was a third team honoree in 2007.
Zimmerman is the first Wolverine in program history to earn first team honors and is one of seven student-athletes named to the first team from District IV. Zimmerman will represent Michigan as an Academic All-America candidate with final results announced Nov. 23.
To be nominated for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district. District IV is made up of schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
An environmental studies major, Zimmerman has started every match as a Wolverine at setter, a streak that currently stands at 95 consecutive matches. A 2008 AVCA All-America second team selection, Zimmerman has posted 4,093 career assists, currently ranking fourth all-time at U-M. This season, she has tallied 999 assists through the first 25 matches, needing just one more for her third straight season with at least 1,000. Her average of 10.98 assists per set currently ranks 30th in the nation.
Paz, a communications major, eclipsed the 700 career kill plateau earlier this season versus Ohio State on Oct. 17 and the 500 career dig mark versus Wisconsin (Oct. 30). She currently leads U-M in kills (336), kills per set (3.69) and attack attempts (819) while ranking fourth on the team in digs with 214.
