Michigan Volleyball Central

The Michigan volleyball Q&A series continues with sophomore/freshman middle blocker Olivia Reed. Reed and the Wolverines travel to the State of Illinois for two matches this weekend. The Maize and Blue faces Northwestern this Friday (Nov. 16) at 7 p.m. in Evanston, Ill. The Wolverines then head to Champaign, Ill., to play at Illinois Saturday night (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m.

Reed, a Plainfield, Mich., native, joined the Wolverines in 2011 and redshirted her first season on campus. This season, Reed played in the 3-0 win over Iowa on Nov. 3, as she had a kill, a block and a dig in the win over the Hawkeyes. Reed is a business major at U-M.

Q: What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
A: I had always been told, 'School first, team second, coach third,' and Michigan just embodied all three perfectly for me. I mean, it was such great academics, I love the girls here and the coaches are phenomenal. I couldn't think of going anywhere else after coming and visiting here.

Q: How big a part was the coaching staff in your decision to come to Michigan?
A: Yeah, I had heard some about them before and everyone only had good things to say about them. Then when I actually met them and talked to the girls here about them, I knew definitely. And just their family aspect that their kids are always here, it was just going to be a really good fit for me.

Q: Talk about the Iowa match. How fun was it to play with the energy of the fans and your teammates?
A: It was just really fun. I liked how supportive my teammates were. Carly (Warner) came in and it was exciting that I got a kill from her, but I just loved the atmosphere, and knowing that my teammates had my back and supported me so much. It was great.

Q: It's seems like the team is a close-knit group on and off the court. Is that true?
A: We are so close. I think at times other people think we're too close, but we're like sisters. We're on the road, we'll come back from a long road trip and the first we do is, 'Hey, let's meet at someone's house.' We're always together, even for lunch and stuff. Outside of volleyball we definitely spend the majority of time together.

Q: What do you think are some keys to the team's current winning streak?
A: Even just in practice yesterday I was thinking about this, just that everyone is working so hard, and wants everyone to do well. Also, even in practice, I feel like sometimes we treat it like games because we're so competitive and want to win, and we're making each other so much better. I think right now that's really translating into game situations. You'll see things we worked on in practice during the week, and then seeing it happen in a game has been really cool.
