LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of Michigan volleyball junior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Mideast Region team, the organization announced this morning (Tuesday, Dec. 4). In addition, junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) received honorable mention on the team.
Cross, a middle blocker, has played in every set of every match for the Maize and Blue this season. The 2012 All-Big Ten honoree is third in the Big Ten in blocking, averaging 1.25 blocks per set. She also averages 2.57 kills a set. Cross, who has a team-high .308 hitting percentage, has put down double-digit kills 18 times this year and has recorded seven or more blocks in a match seven times in 2012, including a career-high nine against Western Kentucky (Sept. 15).
Cross earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Oct. 15 after a 14-kill, seven-block performance against Illinois on Oct. 10. She recorded a career-high 18 kills and had a .444 hitting percentage at Northwestern (Nov. 16) and registered 17 kills in a five-set win over Arkansas (Sept. 1). This past weekend in the NCAA Tournament second round at No. 9 Louisville, Cross had 10 kills and six blocks in the four-set win over the Cardinals.
Erwin, an outside hitter, has played in every match for Michigan this year. The 2012 All-Big Ten recipient leads the Wolverines and is sixth in the Big Ten in both points (4.65) and kills (4.12) per set. Erwin also has 2.44 digs a set, 33 service aces and 65 total blocks. The Spring, Texas, native had 26 and 24 kills, respectively, in U-M's 2012 NCAA Tournament wins over Tennessee (Nov. 29) and No. 9 Louisville (Nov. 30).
Erwin was named the Big Ten co-Player of the Week on Aug. 27 after averaging 5.87 kills per set in four matches of the Tiger Invitational. That included a career-high 29-kill performance in a win over Virginia Tech (Aug. 25). Erwin has been in double figures in kills 31 times while recording 16 double-doubles. She tied a career high with 17 digs in a win over Arkansas (Sept. 1) and ended the regular season with a 22-kill performance at No. 14 Ohio State (Nov. 23).
Cross and Erwin become the 14th and 15th Wolverines to earn AVCA All-Mideast Region honors. It is also the first all-region award for both players. The duo is the first to earn all-region honors since Alex Hunt and Lexi Zimmerman were named to the team in 2010.
Michigan (25-11) travels to Berkeley, Calif., and the Haas Pavilion to face Michigan State in the 2012 NCAA Tournament regional semifinals Friday (Dec. 7) at 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST). The match will be streamed on ESPN3.com.
