LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of Michigan volleyball junior middle blocker Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2012 All-America third team, and junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) an honorable mention, the organization announced this morning (Wednesday, Dec. 12).
Cross, who was named to the All-Big Ten and All-Berkeley Regional teams, has established Michigan's single-season blocks record with 176 heading into Thursday's (Dec. 13) match against third-ranked Texas. She also is averaging 2.63 kills and leads U-M with a .314 hitting percentage. Cross had 15 kills and a career-high nine digs in the Wolverines' 3-1 win over Stanford in the Berkeley Regional final on Dec. 8. She had a career-high 18 kills against Northwestern on Nov. 16 and had nine blocks in the match against Western Kentucky on Sept. 14. Cross has 20 double-digit kill performances and has led U-M in blocks 28 times this season.
Erwin, who was named the Berkeley Regional Most Valuable Player, leads the Wolverines, averaging 4.20 kills per set. She had 23 kills and made it a double-double with 16 digs in the four-set win over Stanford in the NCAA Tournament regional final. Erwin has 33 double-digit kill performances in 2012 and 17 double-doubles. She also had 26 kills in the first-round tournament win over Tennessee on Nov. 29.
Cross and Erwin become the 10th and 11th Wolverines to be named to one of the AVCA All-America teams (seven to the three teams, four honorable mentions). They are the first All-Americans to wear the Maize and Blue since Lexi Zimmerman and Alex Hunt were named to the second and third teams, respectively, in 2010.
Cross will pick up her award at the AVCA brunch Friday morning (Dec. 14) in Louisville, Ky.
Michigan will play No. 3 Texas in the NCAA Tournament national semifinal this Thursday (Dec. 13) at 7 p.m., at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.
