ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 12th-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team opened the 2012 season with a split on Saturday (Jan. 21) on day one of the Michigan Kick-Off inside Canham Natatorium. After falling 6-3 to No. 10 Indiana to begin the day, U-M rebounded with a 17-13 triumph over Colorado State in the evening.

In the Indiana contest, goalkeeper Tara Brigham (Baytown, Texas/Sterling) notched six saves after entering the game to start the third period for Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado), who started the game. Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) and Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) recorded the only goals for the Wolverines, with Golden registering two in the third period. Golden and Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) each tallied three steals.

Indiana built a 4-0 lead early in the second period, before the Wolverines responded after drawing an ejection, which led to a Nolan skip-shot tally for U-M's first goal of 2012.

Indiana quickly answered back on the next possession to extend the lead before scoring another with less than six minutes remaining in the period for a 6-1 score. Michigan then slowed down Indiana's offense, drawing three ejections while closing the gap, as Golden, who finished off the day with four goals, capitalized on two power plays to cut the margin in half, 6-3. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth period to register the final score.

Against the Rams in the last game of the day, Audrey Pratt (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) finished with four goals, with Meagan Cobb (Hudson, Mich./Hudsonville) and Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./ Tesoro) each registering a hat trick to propel the Wolverines to their first win of the season.

After a pair of goals from Cobb and a skip shot from Golden on a breakaway, the Wolverines trailed 5-3 after the first period. Adamson finished with seven saves to provide space during the Wolverines' strong first half.

In the second period, Michigan's defense held the Rams to one tally, locking up the score at six apiece behind Pratt's conversion from the left side (2:23). Michigan then scored three unanswered -- spotlighted by a back-hand shot from Cobb with 39 seconds left to give U-M a 9-6 lead at the break.

In the third frame, CSU scored five goals, but Michigan outscored the Rams in the last two frames, 8-7, to hold off a comeback.

The Wolverines will open day two of the Michigan Kick-Off on Sunday (Jan. 22) when they meet No. 3 UCLA at 10:15 a.m. U-M then jumps back in the pool with the Rams at 2 p.m.
