PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked University of Michigan water polo team picked up a 7-5 win over No. 14 UC Davis Sunday afternoon (Feb. 5) at Avery Aquatic Center after opening the day with a 10-3 loss to No. 4 UCLA at Baker Pool. The Wolverines posted a 1-3 mark at the Stanford Invitational to place seventh in the two-day event.

Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) scored four goals on the day to lead U-M's offense. Lauren Colton (Mission Viejo, Calif./Tesoro) added two goals, while Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville), Hathaway Moore (Atherton, Calif./Saint Francis), Elizabeth Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad), Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) and Lauren Thatcher (Canyon Lake, Calif./Temescal Canyon) finished the day with one apiece. Goalkeeper Tara Brigham (Baytown, Texas/Sterling) recorded six saves.

Against No. 14 UC Davis, Golden, Williams and Nolan scored to help Michigan carry a 3-2 advantage into the second quarter. The Aggies retaliated with two goals before the break, but a score from Thatcher kept the score even at the half, 4-4.

Michigan's assault in the third period gave them the advantage as Colton and Golden added scores to outscore UC Davis in the second half, 3-1.

Earlier in the day, Michigan looked to avenge a loss to No. 4 UCLA earlier this season. Michigan knotted the score twice in the first half, when Golden and Cobbs' goals made it 2-2. Trailing by one in the second quarter, Colton hit a shot to draw the score even, 3-3. UCLA retaliated with seven unanswered goals in the final two frames to extend the lead and secure the win.

Next, Michigan will head back to the West Coast on Feb. 25-26 when it participates in the Anteater Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On this past weekend's play overall against UCLA and UC Davis ... "We had a very good first half against UCLA. With 30 seconds left we had an opportunity to go up 4-2, we did not capitalize, and they capitalized at the buzzer to tie it at three. We just disappeared in the third period. When you play the third highly ranked team in a span of less than 24 hours, and you are a young team like we are, that can happen. That is why UCLA is UCLA. I'm very happy with the first half, very happy. It was probably as good of a first half as I could ask for, but this team is not quite there yet to put together four quarters. We came back in what I would call a gut-check game against UC Davis and we played well. We held them scoreless for 17 minutes, and to do that to a top-15 team, Tara Brigham did a nice job and our defense did a nice job. It could have ended on a sour note, but to have two games that were toss-ups yesterday, and one first half that was very good and then a good game against UC Davis, basically three and a half games of very competitive water polo against highly ranked teams and only one bad half, I'll take that at this point of the season."
